Oldest Known Ancestor

  1. Capt. John Mason the Elder [born abt. 1680] and was of Surry/Sussex Counties of Virginia USA.
  2. Christopher Mason was born in Sussex Co ca.1724. After his marriage to Sarah Chappell they moved to Prince George Co. VA. Then this deed of 1750 references when they moved to Brunswick Co. VA:  19 Jun 1750 John Mason of Albemarle Parish in Surry Co to his son Christopher Mason of Prince George Co, deed of gift. 200 acres which I purchased from Gilbert Ivy, on the south side of Meherrin River, joining William Adams, William Davis, Ides Smith. (Brunswick Co. VA)
  3. Henry Mason was still living at home in Brunswick Co. VA when his mother Sarah Chappell Mason's will was read in September of 1796. Henry Mason married Rebecca Jeter 11-11-1796 in Greensville Co. VA. Surety was Rebecca's father John Jeter.  John Jeter died by 1815. His estate does not list his daughter Rebecca nor any Mason heirs. Henry Mason next married Lizza (Elizabeth) Barnes January 9, 1816 also in Greensville Co. VA. The surety was Bennett (Benjamin) Barnes brother to Lizza. At this time Bennett Barnes had married February 15, 1815 Susanna Simmons Whitehorn the widow of Philemon Whitehorn of Sussex Co. Philemon was the nephew of my third great-grandfather Edward Whitehorn that married secondly Sarah Meglamre Clanton of Sussex Co.  (Three years ago we had the signature of Henry Mason verified as being the same on both the marriage bond with Rebecca Jeter and with Lizza (Elizabeth) Barnes.)
  4. Thomas R. Mason was born October 25, 1818 in Greensville Co. VA to Henry Mason and Lizza (Elizabeth) Barnes. Following the deaths of his parents Thomas Mason was raised by his uncle and aunt John and Elizabeth Bass Barnes who married 1803 Greensville Co. Thomas Mason first is listed in the 1827 Greensville Co. VA taxes as "John Barnes and T. Mason ch." then in 1838 Greensville Co. VA taxes as "John Barnes and Thomas R. Mason"  Thomas Mason married Eliza Jane Newsom, dau. of David Newsom and Elizabeth Whitehorn, on December 22, 1840 in Sussex Co. VA. Minister was Eliza's cousin Rev. Josiah Clanton Bailey.  Thomas and Eliza then moved with her grandmother Sarah Meglamre Whitehorn to Hardeman Co. TN where Sarah died in 1842. The Masons then moved over to Haywood Co. TN. (A Masonic Document in AR also confirms the above.)
  5. William D. Mason was born September 10, 1842 in Haywood Co. TN.  The Mason family then moved to Jackson Co. Arkansas in the fall of 1856 along with the William Stuart family of Sussex Co. VA.  The Mason family established what became known as the Mason Community in Glaize Township of Jackson Co. Arkansas. There William D. Mason married Matilda Henry b. May 17, 1846 Hardin Co. TN, the daughter of William Henry b. 1804 VA and Elizabeth Russell b. 1813 TN. William D. Mason served 4 1/2 years in the Arkansas Bloody 7th during the Civil War. He was wounded at the Siege of Atlanta in July 1864, taken to Way Hospital Meridian MS and then to a POW Camp in Memphis TN until the end of the Civil War.
