CIVIL WAR
James Turner Mason, son of Samuel Mason - Conscripted 8 Jul 1862 into Co. E, 23rd Regt, NC Troops CSA.  Present or accounted for until captured at South Mountain,  MD (right before the battle of Antietam) on or about 14 Sep 1862.  Confined at Ft. Delaware, DE, until paroled and transferred to Aiken's Landing, VA, 2 Oct 1862 for exchange.  Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on 10 Nov 1862. Shown on duty Mar-Jun 1863. Participated in battles of Fredericksburg (Dec 1862) and Chancellorsville (May 1963). He was wounded in the arm and shoulder and captured  on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA . The 23 rd (along with the 5th, 12th,and  20th as a brigade under Gen Iverson) were ambushed by Federals under the command of Gen Abner Doubleday and Gen Baxter. The 23rd lost 84% of its men during this battle.  Confined at Ft. Delaware, DE, from 6 Jul 1863 until transferred to Pt. Lookout, MD, 15 & 18 Oct 1863.  Died at Pt. Lookout, MD, 8 Jan 1864 of acute dysentery.

Richard Mason, son of Samuel Mason - 1862 - Enlisted 1st Regt. Tenn. Inf (Turney's Regt.) Co. F.  Richard Mason of Samuel migrated to Weakley Co. TN before 1862 along with a great many people from Granville Co., NC, following some of his mothers family, i.e. the Weathers, Winstons and Freemans along with his future wife (before 1860) and some of her family.  All of Samuel Mason's other descendants were residents of the same area of NC until WW II.

Benjamin G. Mason, son of Samuel Mason - Listed as a farmer from Granville Co., he was conscripted age 23 on 10 May 1862 for the formation of the 55th Regt. NC Infantry. This unit served in the Dept of NC and then was incorporated into Generals Davis and Cook's Brigade in Northern Virginia. he was reported AWOL Jun 1862.  Returned to duty on an unspecified date.  Wounded in the leg at Falling Waters, MD, 14 Jul 1863 (a week after Gettysburg). Hospitalized at Richmond, VA. Furloughed for 30 days on 29 Jul 1863.  Returned to duty on an unspecified date.  Wounded in the arm at the Wilderness, VA 5 May 1864. Reported in hospital at Danville, VA 16 Jun 1864.  Returned to duty prior to 27 Oct 1864 when he was killed at Burgess' Mill, VA, during the siege of Petersburg.
