Ancestors of James D. Mason¹ supposedly used the name "Dexter" 7 generations and James D. was the fifth. There is a possibility that James's parents came from Connecticut. After 1841, James D. Mason¹ and family traveled through Canada into Michigan and was there for the birth of daughter Mary E. Mason by 1845. By 1849, the family was at Fairfield, Huron county, Ohio based on the 1850 OH census.
